Eta Carinae

An unstable luminous blue variable pair ~7500 light-years away. Briefly the second-brightest star in the sky during its 1843 Great Eruption, when it shed several solar masses of material into the bipolar Homunculus Nebula. Expected to end as a supernova or hypernova.
