Variable Star

A star whose brightness changes over time, either intrinsically (pulsations, eruptions) or due to external factors (eclipses by a companion, rotation of dark spots). Periods range from fractions of a second to decades. Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars serve as "standard candles" for measuring cosmic distances.
